อีกหนึ่งหน้าประวัติศาสตร์ที่คนไทยร่วมภาคภูมิใจ เมื่อ "วัดพระมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร" จังหวัดนครศรีธรรมราช ได้รับการขึ้นทะเบียนเป็น มรดกโลกทางวัฒนธรรมของ UNESCO อย่างเป็นทางการ เมื่อวันที่ 25 กรกฎาคม 2569 นับเป็น มรดกโลกทางวัฒนธรรมแห่งแรกของภาคใต้ และเป็นแห่งที่ 6 ของประเทศไทย

บนพื้นที่กว่า 34 ไร่ วัดพระมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหารเป็นศูนย์กลางพระพุทธศาสนาที่สืบทอดความศรัทธามายาวนานกว่า 1,250 ปี เต็มไปด้วยโบราณสถานอันทรงคุณค่า ทั้งสถาปัตยกรรม ศิลปกรรม และประเพณีที่ยังคงมีชีวิต แบ่งพื้นที่ออกเป็น เขตพุทธาวาส และ เขตสังฆาวาส ซึ่งล้วนบอกเล่าเรื่องราวของนครศรีธรรมราชในฐานะเมืองสำคัญของคาบสมุทรไทยมาตั้งแต่อดีต

หัวใจของวัดคือ องค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ เจดีย์ทรงระฆังคว่ำแบบลังกาอันสง่างาม สูง 55.90 เมตร มีเส้นผ่านศูนย์กลาง 27 เมตร ตั้งอยู่บนฐานสี่เหลี่ยมจัตุรัสกว้างด้านละ 30.50 เมตร ส่วนปลียอดหุ้มด้วยทองคำหนักกว่า 725 กิโลกรัม ส่องประกายงดงามเหนือเมืองนครศรีธรรมราช และถือเป็นหนึ่งในต้นแบบของเจดีย์ทรงลังกาที่สำคัญที่สุดของประเทศไทย
อีกหนึ่งภาพจำที่ทำให้วัดแห่งนี้เป็นที่รู้จักไปทั่วโลก คือ เจดีย์บริวารทั้ง 153 องค์ ที่เรียงรายล้อมองค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ไว้อย่างงดงาม ราวกับกำลังโอบล้อมหัวใจของพุทธศาสนา เมื่อมองจากมุมสูงจะเห็นความยิ่งใหญ่ของผังวัดที่เป็นเอกลักษณ์ และแทบไม่มีที่ใดในประเทศไทยมีองค์ประกอบทางสถาปัตยกรรมเช่นนี้

นอกจากองค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์แล้ว ภายในวัดยังเต็มไปด้วยโบราณสถานสำคัญ ไม่ว่าจะเป็น วิหารทับเกษตร วิหารหลวง ลานประทักษิณ วิหารเขียน วิหารโพธิ์ลังกา เจดีย์พระปัญญา และซุ้มประตูโบราณ ฯลฯ ซึ่งล้วนมีเรื่องราวทางประวัติศาสตร์ ตำนาน และปริศนาธรรมที่สืบทอดต่อกันมายาวนาน

อีกหนึ่งคุณค่าที่ทำให้ วัดพระมหาธาตุวรมหาวิหาร ได้รับการยกย่องให้เป็น มรดกโลกที่ยังมีชีวิต คือ "ประเพณีแห่ผ้าขึ้นธาตุ" ประเพณีสำคัญที่ชาวนครศรีธรรมราชสืบทอดต่อเนื่องกันมายาวนานเกือบ 800 ปี จากตำนานกล่าวว่าเกิดสมัยพระเจ้าศรีธรรมโศกราช ช่วงปีพ.ศ.1773 ประเพณีนี้จัดขึ้นเป็นประจำทุกปีในวันขึ้น 15 ค่ำ เดือน 3 ตรงกับวันมาฆบูชา โดยพุทธศาสนิกชนจากทั่วประเทศจะร่วมกันอัญเชิญผ้าพระบฏและผ้าพระธาตุ ซึ่งมีทั้งสีขาว สีเหลือง และสีแดง ขึ้นห่มองค์พระบรมธาตุเจดีย์ เพื่อถวายเป็นพุทธบูชาและน้อมรำลึกถึงพระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้า โดยเฉพาะ ผ้าพระบฏ ซึ่งเป็นผืนผ้าที่วาดภาพพุทธประวัติอย่างวิจิตร นับเป็นมรดกทางศิลปวัฒนธรรมที่สะท้อนทั้งศรัทธา ภูมิปัญญา และอัตลักษณ์ของชาวนครศรีธรรมราชได้อย่างงดงาม

การได้รับการขึ้นทะเบียนเป็นมรดกโลกในครั้งนี้ ไม่เพียงสะท้อนคุณค่าของโบราณสถานแห่งหนึ่งเท่านั้น แต่ยังเป็นการยืนยันถึงคุณค่าของอารยธรรม ศิลปกรรม และความศรัทธาที่สืบทอดต่อเนื่องมากว่าพันปี พร้อมส่งต่อมรดกอันล้ำค่านี้ให้คนรุ่นหลังและผู้คนทั่วโลกได้ร่วมเรียนรู้และภาคภูมิใจไปด้วยกัน
🌏 The City of Dhamma, Home to Southern Thailand’s First World Heritage Site
A new chapter in Thai history has become a source of national pride. On 25 July 2026, Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat was officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a Cultural World Heritage Site. It is the first cultural World Heritage Site in southern Thailand and the sixth in the country.

Covering an area of more than 5 hectares, Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan has served as a centre of Buddhism for more than 1,250 years, preserving an unbroken tradition of faith. The temple is home to a remarkable collection of historic monuments, architecture, artistic treasures, and living traditions. Its grounds are divided into the Buddhāvāsa (the sacred precinct for religious worship) and the Sanghāvāsa (the monastic precinct), each reflecting the story of Nakhon Si Thammarat as one of the most important cities on the Thai Peninsula since ancient times.

At the heart of the temple stands the Great Relic Stupa, a magnificent Sri Lankan-style bell-shaped stupa rising 55.90 metres above the ground with a diameter of 27 metres. It stands upon a square base measuring 30.50 metres on each side, while its soaring spire is clad in more than 725 kilograms of gold, shining brilliantly above the city of Nakhon Si Thammarat. It is regarded as one of the finest and most influential examples of the Sri Lankan-style stupa in Thailand.
Another iconic feature that has made the temple internationally renowned is the 153 subsidiary stupas surrounding the Great Relic Stupa, forming a harmonious architectural ensemble that appears to embrace the spiritual heart of the temple. Viewed from above, the distinctive layout of the temple complex reveals a monumental composition unlike almost any other in Thailand.

Beyond the Great Relic Stupa, the temple is home to many other significant historic monuments, including Wihan Thap Kaset, the Royal Vihara, the Circumambulatory Courtyard, Wihan Khian, Wihan Pho Lanka, Phra Panya Stupa, and its historic gateways. Each preserves stories of history, legend, and profound Buddhist teachings that have been passed down through generations.

Another important reason for the inscription of Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan as a living World Heritage Site is the Hae Pha Khuen That (Cloth Procession to the Great Relic Stupa), a cherished annual tradition that has been observed continuously by the people of Nakhon Si Thammarat for nearly 800 years. According to local tradition, the ceremony originated during the reign of King Si Thamma Sokarat, around B.E. 1773 (c. 1230 CE). Today, the procession is held each year on the full moon day of the third lunar month, coinciding with Makha Bucha Day. Buddhist devotees from across Thailand join together to carry sacred cloths, including Phra Bot painted with scenes from the life of the Buddha and Phrathat cloths in white, yellow, and red, before ceremonially draping them around the Great Relic Stupa as an offering of devotion and in remembrance of the Lord Buddha. The beautifully painted Phra Bot also represents an important artistic and cultural heritage, reflecting the faith, wisdom, and unique identity of the people of Nakhon Si Thammarat.

This World Heritage inscription is not only a recognition of the outstanding value of a remarkable historic monument, but also an affirmation of a civilisation, artistic tradition, and enduring faith that have flourished continuously for more than a thousand years. It ensures that this invaluable cultural legacy will be preserved and shared with future generations and with people around the world.
